As the first hospital in Maryland to implement RQI, Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) delivers evidence-based, patient-centered care and holding themselves accountable for that care.
GBMC leadership and resuscitation stakeholders were deliberate in the review and consideration of RQI by conducting a feasibility study.
GBMC's committed to RQI's resuscitation solutions and saving more lives is represented by their adoption of the program, by policy, as the primary educational program for emergency response and resuscitation.
They are leading the way in performance excellence.
RQI Save Story
Roel Tiberio, RN, BSN, a nurse manager at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, shares his experience of helping to save the life of a man in sudden cardiac arrest. Roel heard a commotion outside of the GBMC cafeteria and saw a man had collapsed.
He recognized the man was in cardiac arrest and quickly began CPR, advising others to call the code team and go get an AED. Once the defibrillator arrived, a shock was advised and delivered and then Roel resumed CPR. After recovering in the hospital, the man returned home to his family.
“RQI prepared me for this. I had RQI training a week before the event, and without that training, I don’t think I’d be able to do what I had to do… I made a difference in someone’s life”
— Roel Tiberio, RN, BSN GBMC Nurse Manager
After adopting the RQI program in 2016, GBMC embarked on an internal campaign to promote a culture of resuscitation excellence within the health system.
Using data feedback regarding learner skill competence and compliance, Deborah Higgins, MS, RN, CHSE, GBMC's Simulation Manager and American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center Coordinator developed a robust set of policies and best practices for internal improvement and for external health system partners.
