Cleveland Clinic

Helping Save More Lives Through Innovation and High-Quality CPR Since 2022

At the forefront of modern medicine since the early 20th century, Cleveland Clinic has evolved to be an industry leader and medical innovator, one of the premier healthcare systems in the U.S. To maintain this status and compete against other top-ranking systems, Cleveland Clinic participates in innovative research and embraces cutting-edge education programs.

Since 2022, Cleveland Clinic has partnered with RQI Partners to offer digital CPR programs at several Clinic facilities, including the HeartCode® Complete program that requires training every two years. However, studies show that the conventional two-year basic life support training cycle isn’t optimal for achieving the mastery learning of CPR skills needed to save lives. Quarterly skills refreshers promote ongoing skill mastery, so healthcare professionals are better equipped to save lives during a cardiac arrest emergency.

The American Heart Association® (AHA®) gold-standard is Resuscitation Quality Improvement® (RQI®), an innovative, science-based model featuring a quarterly skills component. In addition to providing the highest quality of CPR training, the RQI Program is also delivered at a lower cost than traditional CPR training.

Get With The Guidelines® – Resuscitation

Get With the Guidelines – Resuscitation (GWTG-R) is a proven in-hospital approach to improving patient outcomes across cardiovascular and stroke focus areas from the American Heart Association. This program promotes consistent adherence to the latest research-driven guidelines and measurement, while providing data and information to professionals for continual improvement in patient care.

RQI Partners applauds Cleveland Clinic, which has achieved five successive years of Gold recognition in the Get With The Guidelines – Resuscitation program for its care of adult patients. Cleveland Clinic’s adoption of this program aligns with its standards of helping save lives by preventing in-hospital cardiac arrest and optimizing outcomes through benchmarking, quality improvement and research.

How does RQI work?

RQI learners are assigned a course or courses: RQI Healthcare Provider (includes BLS), RQI ALS, RQI PALS. Learners have a slightly longer introductory session to each course in the initial quarter. Each subsequent quarter features shorter low-dose, high-frequency training with eLearning and skills practice.

RQI eCredentials, representing the gold standard of verified competence in high-quality CPR, are issued with ongoing course completion. Learners can also download a free, traditional two-year American Heart Association eCard. CE/CME credits can be claimed at the completion of all four quarters (0.75 credits for RQI Provider; 1.75 credits for RQI ALS and RQI PALS, respectively).

RQI FAQs

RQI FAQs

Why is RQI better than other resuscitation education?

  1. RQI is delivered through individually accessed stations within your hospital, with robust cleaning guidelines to ensure safety for each user.
  2. RQI can be completed on your own schedule, rather than a specific class time.
  3. RQI provides continuity of training when unprecedented situations arise and other methods of training, such as the classroom, may compromise learner safety.
  4. RQI is integrated seamlessly with American Heart Association science.
  5. Low-dose, high-frequency training (quarterly training instead of once every two years) is proven to sustain knowledge and skills more effectively over time and at a higher level of quality. This leads to high-quality CPR performance and competence, in turn maximizing lifesaving outcomes from cardiac arrest.

There are many other reasons why RQI is the ideal program for resuscitation education. Please contact your RQI administrator for more information.

“With RQI, you almost become entirely retrained on CPR because now you’re doing it at the right rate and depth — it’s like a whole new ball game.”

“I’ve visibly noticed our ventilation rates decrease and move into very safe zones over time — and this has occurred without prompting or specific focus. RQI has lowered our ventilation rates, and our muscle memory has shifted.”

“It’s the idea that my employees get to touch, see and perform high-quality CPR every three months — regardless of their schedule, when they’re working, or which patients they’re treating. Their ability to maintain mastery and proficiency, for me, is what sells this program.”

RQI Simulation Station

The American Heart Association digital resuscitation training portfolio incorporates the latest American Heart Association science and Laerdal Medical technology for a learning experience that aims to achieve and verify mastery of resuscitation skills through the Resuscitation Quality Improvement® (RQI®) program. Learners reach this level of mastery only with more frequent, deliberate practice using the RQI Simulation Station.

Studies show that the conventional two-year basic life support training cycle is not optimal for achieving the mastery learning of high-quality CPR skills needed to help save more lives. Skills begin to decay in as few as three months after training. Quarterly, low-dose, high-frequency skills refreshers promote ongoing skill mastery and competence, ultimately preparing  healthcare professionals  to help save lives during a cardiac arrest emergency.

Going Digital is a Cost-effective Solution

We know that leveraging your existing technology investments and closely evaluating enterprise-wide transitions such as Docebo, Epic, and more are top of mind. Digital CPR training not only reduces administrative burden, but also helps you control staff education costs. The RQI program:

  • Provides CPR training stations that are owned by RQI Partners and leased to customers as part of their contracts. RQI customers can contact the RQI Support Team directly for assistance with equipment replacement or maintenance.
  • Reduces or eliminates labor expenses by assimilating sessions into the learner’s normal work schedule, without the need for replacement staff.
  • Eliminates the cost of classroom instructors and course materials, books and cards.
  • Allows for a new employee, or learner, to take on the license of that of a former employee upon exit, thereby controlling costs due to turnover, retirement, etc.
  • Erases the need for IT staff to perform manual updates. New science and evidence-based practices are automatically updated through cloud-based software.
  • Integrates RQI Analytics application, allowing administrators to view user compliance and performance analytics in real time.

Going Digital is the Gold Standard

Digital and simulation-led resuscitation training equips healthcare providers to deliver excellent and efficient CPR to patients. Our self-directed skills sessions boost confidence and competence, while our science-based technology affords flexibility. Healthcare providers can learn on their own schedules — increasing time spent with patients and decreasing time spent in a classroom. With highly realistic, lifelike simulation, the RQI program meets healthcare providers where they are to provide high-quality CPR to every patient, every time. The RQI digital CPR training program:

  • Prepares staff to respond with lifesaving, high-quality CPR.
  • Utilizes the resuscitation and education science from the American Heart Association featuring 2020 Guidelines and innovative True Adaptive™ learning . Also, with RQI, the platform automatically updates the training to reflect these Guidelines. Your team will be well on its way to CPR preparedness when the 2025 Guidelines are released.
  • Provides access to the Resuscitation User Network (RUN), an online community where program administrators can access tools and resources to help them make the most of their resuscitation programs.

“When we needed a solution to the challenges of delivering certification training across Hawaii’s remote locations and islands, our colleagues in Maui referred us to RQI Partners and RQI came through for us in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
The convenience of having in-house certifications with fixed and mobile stations, and personalized learning modules that can be accessed online from anywhere has been a true lifesaver. The mobile stations are perfect for our diverse spaces and teams, always ready when we need them. The data and analytic support have been outstanding, allowing us to keep improving. We loved it so much that we expanded our investment beyond BLS, ACLS, and PALS to include the NRP module as well for our NICU teams.
We’re especially thankful for RQI’s caring and attentive customer service, which made the transition so smooth. And the best part? Our staff can now recertify before or during their shifts, with no need for administrative leave, meaning less disruption and more focus on patient care.”
